A few precautions should be taken before and during the measurement:
- While using the oximeter, the patient may be sitting, standing or lying down.
- The user should not walk or run while taking measurements and should not move the arm or hand while the device is attached to the finger.
- The user is advised to wash his/her hands before use.
- Nail polish, especially dark nail polish, can affect the accuracy of the measurement. It is recommended to remove the nail polish before measurement.
- Make sure that the finger nail on which the measurement is taken is not damaged (the light beam of the oximeter must be able to pass through the nail without obstruction).
- The measurement can be taken on any finger, except the thumb. Ideally, the index or middle finger should be used.
- Do not use the device as the sole basis for medical decision making. It is only designed to provide additional information that you can share with your doctor or caregiver.
- Be sure to keep your finger as still as possible when using the device, as the device may misinterpret excessive movement as a heartbeat.
- The device has no alarms; there will be no sound to warn you if the oxygen level in your blood is too low, or if your pulse is too fast or too slow.
- Do not talk or move, and breathe normally throughout the measurement.
